AIA Health Happy Closes for Sale on 30 Nov 2026: The End of First-Baht Health Coverage

Looking for health insurance in Thailand that covers you from the first baht? Now is the time to act. AIA has announced that AIA Health Happy and AIA Health Saver (PPR), popular lump-sum health insurance plans, will close for sale, with applications accepted only until 30 November 2026. Replacement plans build co-payment into the plan structure, at higher premiums.

This article explains how the new plans differ, why health insurance is changing, and our recommended health insurance approach for 2026.

AIA’s New Health Insurance Plans: Balanced vs Begin

Balanced

  • AIA Smart Network hospital: no co-payment
  • Outside the Smart Network: 20% co-payment, capped at THB 60,000 per admission

Begin

  • AIA Smart Network hospital: 10% co-payment, capped at THB 10,000 per admission
  • Outside the Smart Network: 30% co-payment, capped at THB 90,000 per admission

The per-admission caps let you plan your reserves, but hospital choice is reduced. If your preferred hospital or regular doctor is outside the network, you share costs on every admission.

Why Lump-Sum Health Insurance Is Changing

  1. Rapid medical inflation: roughly 15% at the end of 2024, several times general inflation
  2. High volume of minor claims and unnecessary admissions, raising system-wide costs
  3. Insurers must control costs through networks, co-payment and premium adjustments

The Health Insurance Trend: Toward Full Co-payment

  • Stage 1 (March 2025): Co-payment introduced as a renewal “penalty” for claims above set thresholds
  • Stage 2 (now): Co-payment built into plan structure from day one
  • Next: We expect lump-sum plans without co-payment to become increasingly rare

The Renewal Co-payment Penalty Still Applies

For health policies approved from 20 March 2025:

  • 3+ minor-illness claims per year and claims of 200%+ of premium: 30% co-payment
  • 3+ general-illness claims per year (excluding major surgery and critical illness) and claims of 400%+ of premium: 30% co-payment
  • Both conditions met: 50% co-payment on inpatient costs the following policy year

It is reviewed each policy year and can be lifted when claims improve, but triggering it on top of a built-in co-payment plan can raise out-of-pocket costs sharply.

Recommended Health Insurance for 2026: Why Consider Health Happy Now

If you’re wondering which health insurance is best for full, simple coverage, Health Happy remains our recommendation for now:

  • Lump-sum coverage from the first baht, no built-in co-payment
  • Free choice of hospital, not tied to a network
  • Simple to understand and plan around

The deadline applies to application submission, not approval. Underwriting may require a medical exam or extra documents, so apply early.

How to Choose the Right Health Insurance

  • Check the annual coverage limit against the hospitals you actually use and future cost increases
  • Confirm your regular hospital is in-network if choosing a co-payment plan
  • Understand both types of co-payment: built-in and renewal-based
  • Choose an advisor who supports you at claim time, because that’s when health insurance proves its value

Health Insurance FAQ

When does AIA Health Happy close?
Applications are accepted until 30 November 2026.

What is lump-sum health insurance?
Coverage that pays actual medical costs within one annual limit, without separate sub-limits per category.

What is co-payment?
The share of medical costs you pay yourself, as a percentage. A 20% co-payment on a THB 100,000 bill means you pay THB 20,000.

Does Health Happy bought now still have renewal co-payment conditions?
Yes, if claims meet the thresholds, but it has no built-in co-payment like the new plans.
